Partnering with Damon Farber Landscape Architects and the Minnesota Zoo, WholeTrees® has taken nature play to a higher plane. The Minnesota Zoo is on a mission to connect people, animals and the natural world to save wildlife. We all take nature play seriously, because kids who play in nature grow up to protect wildlife.
Robinia Courtyard offers several eateries in one interconnected urban space: a coffee shop, a wine bar, and a full-service restaurant. WholeTrees contributed decorative branched trees to adorn the courtyard, which provides a simple yet elegant common dining and entertainment area. The beauty trees interact with the venue’s canopy of namesake Robinia pseudoacacia trees and native perennials planted throughout the space.
WholeTrees supplied round timber trusses on behalf of Morton Building, Inc. for Shade Trees Nursery in Long Island, New York. WholeTrees columns, beams and trusses are available for Morton Building Inc. nationwide.
WholeTrees provided a structural system for this elegantly detailed garage and studio space added onto a single-family home. At home in a palette of tactile and high-integrity materials, WholeTrees branching columns and round timber bents support both levels of the building.
Located in picturesque Vernon County, Wisconsin, the Giles residence considers sustainability in every detail. Drawing on the talents of skilled local artisans, the round timber structure supports other environmentally friendly features such as locally sourced millwork, high-performance insulation, a green roof, an efficient masonry stove, a photovoltaic aray, energy efficient windows and doors, and no/low VOC paints.
How local is ultra-local? The Underhill residence was sculpted from the surrounding landscape. Its round timber structural system was sourced entirely from the adjoining 40 acres of forest, and its millwork came from local mills rather than lumber yards. The interior flooring and exterior stonework came from local limestone quarries, and its straw bale walls were formed from locally grown straw as well. With an earth-sheltered basement and sloping sod roof, it melts into the hillside.
Project: Maharishi University Sustainable Living Building
Location: Fairfield, Iowa
Completion Year: 2012
Maharishi University of Management’s Sustainable Living Building demonstrates how WholeTrees® engineered structural systems can be combined with other building systems like stick frame, SIPs or ICF construction. It satisfies the ILFI Living Building Challenge’s requirements for local material sourcing, and serves as a carbon sink for the building project as a whole.
The attached house is modest in size, and the surrounding landscape is epic. Transitioning to the outdoors with a lyrical and unimposing grace, this round timber pergola responds to the contours of distant hills.
